SÜDOSTASIEN WORKING PAPERS, pp. , 2005/06/23
This paper tries to show that the internet in its online forms, especially chat rooms and e-mail, as well as in its offline extensions, i.e. internet cafés, provides public and private spaces for Indonesia's young generation. These new spaces are relatively autonomous from conventional private and public spaces. This new autonomy is reflected by the actual practices of young users, i.e. looking for boy-/girlfriends, for marriage partners, or just for friends in order to have unrestricted, open talks about personal problems usually emerging during adolescence. Given the anonymity of internet communication, it is also possible to circumvent embodied local conventions like showing an appropriate feeling of shame when facing unknown persons. Thus, the paper argues against a clear cut distinction between the virtual and the real, since a consideration of the differences and continuities between users' offline and online worlds lies at the heart of the interpretation.
