Abstract

Facing the emergence and developments of new technologies and the specific quality of risks attached to them, current strategies of risk management have to be reconsidered. The special systemic character of these risks leads to the need for new forms of risk policy and risk communication. Based on the concepts of systemic risks and reflexive knowledge policy we present the concept of an Internet-based tool for risk communication, a so called “risk-cartography”. This tool, developed as a prototype in the context of the research project “Risk Controversies Visualized” intends to provoke a different societal approach to risk controversies by providing an innovative methodological instrument of visualization. This visualization will be illustrated by two case studies on dietary supplements and nano-scale objects.
