Abstract: Electromagnetic induction surveys are among the most popular techniques for non-destructive investigation of soil properties in order to detect the presence of either ground inhomogeneities or of particular substances. In this paper we develop a regularized algorithm for the inversion of a nonlinear mathematical model well established in applied geophysics, starting from noisy electromagnetic data collected by varying both the height of the measuring device with respect to the ground level and its operating frequency. Assuming the conductivity to be known in advance, we focus on the determination of the magnetic permeability of the soil with respect to depth, and give the analytical expression of the Jacobian matrix of the forward model, which is indispensable for the application of the inversion algorithm. Finally, numerical experiments on synthetic data sets illustrate the effectiveness of the method. Papers of the highest quality that deal with the analysis of algorithms for the solution of continuous models and numerical linear algebra are appropriate for ETNA, as are papers of similar quality that discuss implementation and performance of such algorithms. New algorithms for current or new computer architectures are appropriate provided that they are numerically sound. However, the focus of the publication should be on the algorithm rather than on the architecture. The journal is published by the Kent State University Library in conjunction with the Institute of Computational Mathematics at Kent State University, and in cooperation with the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (RICAM).
