The value of mothers to society
Women’s roles and possibilities have probably never changed as rapidly as during the late 19th and early 20th century. This contribution presents images of prehistoric mothers as imagined by various European artists, whose work was used to illustrate popular literature, schoolbooks and exhibitions. The majority of images depict traditional motifs such as breastfeeding mothers, mothers carrying babies in slings and mothers and small children crafting together. More than about prehistory, these images tell us about women’s lives during the time the art was produced. The transformation of political ideologies between 1870 and 1950 can be traced through the motive of motherhood.
